About

My name is Malik Hyltoft. I have been a teacher in one way or another for 26 years. Like so many of my aging colleagues – and unlike so many others – I have gradually moved away from disciplinary teaching and lesson leaning goals. Instead, I try to place my students in a context, where they can reach learning goals (partly defined by themselves) through curiosity and ambition.

Since I am also a game designer of anything from RPG to board games, some of the learning contexts, I place my students in, are educational games. Some games are 20+ hour games with role-playing elements and homework between sessions, where knowledge of the studied material influence outcome in the game. Others are 20 minute games that train single skills and sweeten the lesson.

It is my experience that gamified learning experiences can generally increase students’ level of activity, make them interact more than usual and help students retain knowledge clearer and for a longer time.

In this blog, I am planning to share some of my ideas on teaching through games, on how to combine different types of gamification into hybrids and just talk about specific projects.

The different projects will gradually be put up for sale in Teachers Pay Teachers (see my shop here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Danish-Gamification). This will be a relatively slow process, since I have some larger projects in mind and want them to be well finished, before they are made available.

Hopefully, you’ll like some of the ideas – or dislike them. In any case, a comment in a constructive tone will be much appreciated!
